An adjective is a word that describes a noun. This means that it is describing a person, place, thing, animal or idea. Common adjectives for primary students include color, size and shape words.

Please see below for a selection of Leveled Lessons for Below Level (basic), and/or On Level (median), and/or Above Level (competent) students.

Teaching Tips

Bring in a particularly interesting object like a stuffed animal, a live animal, a seashell, or a tool. Lay it on a table and allow students a few minutes to look at and handle it. Then write the name of the object at the top of a sheet of chart paper. On the paper list all of the adjectives that the children can think of to describe that object. Be sure to include adjectives for size, shape, color, age, smell, sound, speed, and activity. Assign them to repeat this activity for an object at their house.
