A common noun names any regular, ordinary person, animal, place, thing or idea. It is not specific and not special. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter and names a special person, animal, place, thing or idea. Write the following sentences on your chalkboard and identify the nouns that are the same in each one. Then tell if it is a proper or common noun. Max loves his cat. We read "The Cat in the Hat." We hope to go to the lake this summer. We went swimming in Lake Hope. Joe has a wiener dog named Pretzel. We love to eat pretzels. Tommy brought a rose to his teacher. His teacher's name is Mrs. Rose.
