Facts are ideas or events that are provable, real and true. Opinions are ideas that depend on an individual's point of view. It's a fact that a waltz is written in three-quarter time. It's an opinion that the waltz is the most beautiful type of music. This is a difficult skill because students need to be pretty good readers in order to catch the author's bias. Teach students to look for "opinion words" such as "I feel," "I think," "They should." Teaching Tips

Get some copies of your daily newspaper and give students only the front page section and the editorial page. Explain to them that there are two distinct kinds of writing that can be found on these pages and they are very different. Have students work in groups to determine what makes the two styles of writing different. If they are competent readers, they will come to realize that the front page is actual news, a reflection of the previous day's events. The editorial page is a series of articles written from certain points of view. They are commentary and are not a factual recall of events. When you have determined the difference, have students use highlighters to find indications of authors' biases. This will be indicated by opinion words such as "I feel," "I think," "It seems to me," "They should," "What they ought to do, etc."
