A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. They can indicate one or more than one. Personal pronouns refer to specific people and things. A subject pronoun tells who or what PERFORMS the action of the sentence. I, you, he, she, it, we and they are subject pronouns. An object pronoun indicates who or what RECEIVES the action; me, you, him, hr, it, us and them are object pronouns. Please see below for a selection of Leveled Lessons for Below Level (basic), and/or On Level (median), and/or Above Level (competent) readers.

Teaching Tips

Write the following sentences on the chalkboard. Then discuss with students what pronoun would be an appropriate replacement for each bold word. If the pronoun performs the action, put a "P" over the word. If it receives the action, put an "R" over the word. Joey said Joey would cut the grass. (Replace Joey with "he," and letter P.) Melinda made a card for Carol. (Replace Melinda with "She" and the letter P.) (Replace Carol with "her" and the letter R.) The racer wrecked his car, but the racer was safe. (Replace "the racer" with he and letter P.) Leo got the prize for Leo's essay. (Replace "Leo's" with his and the letter R.)
