After students learn to recognize the numerals 1-9 and can count up to 20, they can begin to put these collections of objects into order according to size. When students do this with objects, it is obvious that as the pile gets larger it means they have more things in it. It is very difficult for students to realize this when they are using abstract numbers. A young child cannot yet know that the numeral 17 represents more than the numeral 15. Be sure to use real counting objects for all of your counting and ordering lessons. Teaching Tips

Do lots of lessons with counting objects--pennies, Unifix? cubes, chips--before you expect students to understand ordering abstract numerals. Continue to use real objects even after they know what each numeral represents. Even if you do abandon the counters, go back to them often, at least in the form of real, countable pictures. Ordering numbers is a developmental skill. If you skip all of the hands-on activities, students will lack a real understanding of what it is you are asking them to do.
