The term Double-Digit Multiplication refers to the numerals on the bottom of a multiplication problem. If this number is a two-digit number, a second and third operation will be required to get the correct answer. First the child multiplies the digit on the right; then the second digit, or the one on the left. Finally these two numbers are added together for a final answer.

One major error students make when they are multiplying by two digits, is that they fail to align the numerals properly, especially when they move to the second digit. Here is a way to help students avoid this mistake. Example: 25 x 43. First have the students write the problem correctly in vertical format: 25 x 43 Complete multiplication with the 3 in the usual manner. 25 x 43 75 As students get ready to multiply by the 4, have them first say: X, 0, AWAY WE GO. When they say X, they cross off the 3, meaning they are finished with it; when they say 0, they put a zero under the number 5 to hold that place. After the multiplication is finished, the child will be able to do the addition to complete the problem without becoming confused because all of the numbers will be aligned correctly.
