A graphic organizer in the shape of a fish will get your students thinking! Have them read the non-fiction passages in the examples and work with them to name the main idea and help them to find supporting details by going back and re-reading the passage. Then choose a grade-level appropriate non-fiction passage for students to read. When they are finished ask them to fill out the graphic organizer. If necessary, you may ask some students to read the passage to your struggling readers, but all the students must be able to identify the main idea and supporting details from the text.
