Students learn to recognize that a word can have multiple meanings, depending on the context in which it is used. Our language is full of words that have multiple, diverse meanings—some, like position, have ten or more distinct definitions. To help students navigate texts effectively, we need to teach them to be alert to the possibility that a word can be defined in different ways.
Once students can identify polysemantic words while reading, determine the most appropriate tiered activity for each student. (You or your students may select words.)
