This lesson builds on the skills introduced in Lesson 6: identifying key events, sequencing events, and including an introduction and conclusion. This reinforcement moves students toward summarizing text independently, as they will be required to do for book reports, other academic writing assignments, and standardized tests. Though designed around a student’s independent reading, you can use this activity to follow up a basal reader story or even a video. Keep in mind that it’s a challenging assignment that should be repeated several times to give children confidence in their writing skills.
