Students create unique personal narratives in this unique graphic organizer. To demonstrate the difference between a generic topic and a specific, defined topic, print "Write about your favorite holiday" on the board. Invite students to comment on the topic and share reasons why this might be a difficult writing topic to tackle. Then write one or all of the following prompts on the board, again inviting student comments.

Teaching Tips

As a class, brainstorm a list of ten generic topics. Then challenge students by setting a timer for ten minutes and having them generate four ideas per topic that could be intriguing and unique to write about in a personal essay.
