Students apply what they know about spelling, word meaning, and common prefixes, suffixes, and roots to broaden their vocabularies. Review the meaning of a prefix, suffix, and root word. Then list a few words that contain a root word and prefix or suffix, such as reread, mistreat, untie, loudly, careful, and leader. For each word, ask students to identify the root word and its prefix or suffix. Talk about how the affix altered the word’s meaning. Then invite students to brainstorm other words that contain prefixes or suffixes.

Teaching Tips

Ask students to write a prefix or suffix on each wheel on the organizer. Then have them fill in the wheels with words they encounter during reading activities.
