This graphic organizer will help students learn to write an acrostic poem. Write the word across for children to see. Ask them to tell what the word means. Explain that when we write sentences, the words go across the page. In the case of an acrostic poem, the first letters of the sentences also spell a word or words when read from top to bottom. Students will enjoy the personal take on this approach to writing an acrostic poem.
The organizer has room for words containing up to eight letters. For longer words, give children another copy of the organizer. Children can tape the pages together so that the boxes on the pages line up. Children may enjoy writing an acrostic about a favorite stuffed animal. Before teaching the lesson, invite children to bring one to school. Have extras on hand for children who may not be able to bring one in.
