How does a pumpkin change after it becomes a jack-o’- lantern? The activities in this center will help students answer this question as they investigate the pumpkin plant’s life cycle, including decomposition and germination. Students record observations and discoveries in pumpkin diaries.

Teaching Tips

Brainstorm words that describe the pumpkin. Record these words on a large pumpkin-shaped chart and display at the center. Share a sample pumpkin diary. Explain that students will make their own diaries at the center and will use them to record observations and thoughts about the pumpkin’s life. Encourage students to refer to the chart for spelling and word-choice help as they write in their pumpkin diaries.
