This essay writing lesson helps students organize their writing. The first time you present it, plan on it taking about 30 minutes. It will get easier and faster for both you and your students. Meanwhile, the children gain confidence and get excited about extending their writing. The trick, however, is not to go too fast. Whether the project takes two days or up to a week, you’ll probably want to assess your instruction. Was the assignment too hard? (typically, it is manageable in the first month of first grade), or were you being exceptionally thorough, for instance allowing every child to share her work?
