Teaching Tips

Tanka (tanhg-kuh) is a classic form of Japanese poetry that dates back at least 1,300 years. Tanka poems are composed of five unrhymed lines. Today’s tanka takes on many forms. The tanka poetry presented in this activity counts words instead of syllables. It follows a 2-, 3-, 2-, 3-, 3- words per line format. Like the traditional tanka, the lines of the poem when read together form a single complete thought.
