Class murals are a fun way to get everyone involved in researching a topic and quickly designing and decorating a large area. Whether you’re studying sea life, farm life, outer space, or Africa, murals provide a wonderful opportunity for students to become exposed to a broad range of information.
Start by cutting a sheet of white bulletin-board paper to mural size. (I use a sheet of paper that is the length of the wall outside my classroom.) Lay the paper on the floor and have students create a background related to the unit you are studying (for example, the ocean bottom, a planet’s surface, a savanna in Africa, etc.). You can assign small sections to each student so that everyone has his own space. You might even consider working with the art teacher on this phase of the project.
